Plenty of big names are in North Carolina for the Wells Fargo Championship at Quail Hollow as the PGA Championship looms two weeks away.

For several years, the Wells Fargo Championship at Quail Hollow was a popular stop on the PGA Tour as a lead-up to the Players Championship. Now under the Tour’s revamped schedule, it’s got the prime spot of being two weeks ahead of the PGA Championship.

Quail Hollow, which recently hosted the 2017 PGA, is this week’s venue.

It’s hosted every year of this event since the inaugural 2003 edition save for in 2017 when Eagle Point held it down while Quail Hollow had the PGA.

The course was renovated for 2017 and last year played more difficult than its pre-renovation. Jason Day won by two at 12-under and was one of just three to reach double digits under.

Rory McIlroy’s 21-under set the tournament record in 2015.

This is a 7,554-yard par-71 track with Bermuda greens. it can play firm and fast and is a course that rewards strokes gained off the tee. The par-3s and par-4s are long, so long ball hitters and/or strong long iron hitters are valued here.

Good course management is required around here as missing in the right spot is required to avoid big numbers.

Early weather forecasts show temperatures in the 70s and 80s with light winds and maybe some weekend rain.

Many thought Tiger Woods would tee it up in familiar climes this week, but it’s hard to fault Big Cat for just taking it easy until Bethpage Black will demand his full attention in two weeks.

That takes some of the air out of the balloon, but the Wells Fargo is still one of the Tour’s better annual stops.

Let’s see who will use this major championship tuneup to his advantage.
