Wells Fargo Championship: Top 10 power rankings at Quail Hollow
If Rory McIlroy could only play one course the rest of his career, this might be it. Quail Hollow requires/allows for driver as much as any PGA Tour venue and that plays up McIlroy’s alley.
The proof is in the pudding as the Northern Irishman famously shot 72-73 to make the cut on the number. He followed it up with a Saturday 66 and a then course record 62 to track down Phil Mickelson for the win.
McIlroy has since reeled off T2-T10-T8-1-T4-T16 at the Wells Fargo Championship since then and added a T22 at the 2017 PGA. McIlroy broke his own course record when he won in 2015 (70-67-61-69).
Quail Hollow’s greens can be tough to get the ball to stop on, but McIlroy’s length gives him shorter clubs in that help his control.
Rory has been the best player for much of 2019. He has seven top-10s highlighted by his first win at the Players Championship. He also owns two top-10s at WGCs and fought for a T21 at Augusta despite playing the worst he has in some time.
McIlroy ranks first on Tour in total strokes gained as well as off the tee and tee to green. He’s also 52nd in putting and 24th around the green.
An aerial test this week is favorable prep for Bethpage in a couple weeks where McIlroy figures to be one of the big favorites.
