The U.S. Open is No. 1 on Lefty’s list of tournaments to conquer. Next might be the Wells Fargo Championship.

Mickelson has absolutely dominated at Quail Hollow over the years. Save for the 2017 PGA Championship, he’s never missed a cut here in 13 starts. He has a whopping 10 top-10s including eight top-fives and a solo second in 2010.

He finished T5 in 2018 (72-72-64-69) and just had too much of a hole to dig out of to truly make noise.

“Yes, I do love the place. I think it’s some of the best crowds we play in front of,” Mickelson said in 2018. “Some of the largest, some of the most fun to play in front of. Wonderful golf course tee to green. It is a hard golf course now. It is a brutally difficult golf course. There’s no letup on it. It was a fight to play well this week.”

The 48-year-old has had a stellar 2019 with a win at Pebble Beach (hello, U.S. Open) and a runner-up at the Desert Classic. He now comes to North Carolina well rested with two weeks off separating his T18 at the Masters.

Lefty ranks 50th on Tour in strokes gained and has a pretty balanced statistical profile. He’s still aggressive as ever at 12th in birdie average. If he can capitalize on this week’s par-5s and drivable par-4s, I like his chances to finally get it done at Quail Hollow.
