Wells Fargo Championship: Dark Horse Candidates at Quail Hollow
Seamus Power (150-1)
Seamus Power may have my favorite name on tour (sorry Kiradech Aphibarnrat). An awesome name, and being Irish instantly vaults him up my personal power rankings of favorite golfers.
He is no slouch on the course either. At least over the last two events that he has played in. At the RBC Heritage, he shot 68-72-68-67 to finish T6 at -9.
I said at the beginning of the article I wouldn’t look too much into The Zurich. Here is the exception. Paired with Canadian David Hearn (tons of Irish immigrated to Canada in the 1840’s-50’s, including the family of yours truly, so it isn’t that weird), the pair played incredibly consistent and shot 68-68-64-68 to finish T5.
For Power to have a shot at making the cut, he is going to need to be better off the tee and with his irons. Around the green, he isn’t too bad, ranking 49th. Off the tee is a trouble area, ranking 138th. The real problem area though, is approaching the green. He is a lowly 210th here, with a disheartening -1.128 S/G.
Players put together hot stretches all the time on Tour. Coming off back-to-back top tens, I like Power this week. There are always going to be week spots in the games of players with odds this low. It didn’t stop C.T. Pan from taking down The RBC Heritage at 200-1, so it isn’t inconceivable.
Power is the last of my dark horse picks for this week at the Wells Fargo Championship. As you are watching, keep an eye out for these guys. They might just surprise you.
