Trey Mullinax – 80/1

Mullinax is another one that hasn’t played in the Byron Nelson before. There are a couple good reasons to like him for this week though.

The first is that Trey seems to play pretty well on Thursday and Friday, compared to how he plays over the weekend. At the Waste Management Open in February, he started 67-64, and finished 72-72. It was a similar situation a few weeks ago at The RBC Heritage. He slowly declined as the week went on, shooting 66-68-71-73.

With how he starts rounds, I see Mullinax making the cut at the Byron Nelson. To be a true dark horse contender, he is going to need to play better around the green.

It’s the part of the game that he has been struggling with this year. He is negative around the green and putting, ranking 164th (-.191 Strokes Gained) and 184th (-.417 SG), respectively. This is vast difference from how he plays off the tee and and on approach shots.

The reason I like him this week is how good he is in those two areas. Off-the-tee, he ranks 45th (.336 SG) while he ranks 34th on approach shots (.471 SG). If he can stay out of trouble, and hone the short game, I like Mullinax as a dark horse this week.
