PGA Championship: Dark Horse Candidates at Bethpage Black
Adam Scott – 50/1
When you can get a former Major winner for a dark horse, and one who has five top-ten finishes at the PGA Championship, you jump on it.
Scott has played well throughout his career whenever there is a PGA Championship.
2018 – Third Place
2013 – Tied for Fifth
2011 – Seventh Place
2006 – Tied for Third
2004 – Tied for Ninth
Some players get up for majors more than others, and Scott seems to be one of those. In fact, he has 17 top-ten finishes across all the major events over his career.
He has been hitting the ball quite well this year. Looking at his strokes gained (SG), it is pretty promising in three of the four major stats. He is 42nd off the tee, 41st in approach shots, and 15th in putting. Combined, that makes for 1.424 SG across those categories.
The only one that he has struggled in is around the green, as he ranks 113th. We know Scott is going to be good. For him to be great, he needs to bring his short game to another level this week.
With the difficulty that Bethpage Black has shown in the past, he is going to need it. During the 2009 U.S. Open at Bethpage, he steadily decreased as the week went on, shooting 69-71-73-75. One of the better veterans on Tour now, I see Scott staying more consistent as the week goes on.
