PGA Championship: Dark Horse Candidates at Bethpage Black
Brian Harman – 250/1
Harman has played well the last two times that a professional event has been played at Bethpage Black. During the 2012 Barclays, he shot -5 for the event, finishing T-5th. Then, in 2016, he finished T-22nd after shooting -1 for the week.
250/1 are long odds to say the least. It hasn’t stopped others from winning this year, as we have seen multiple players win tournaments, who entered as 200/1 or higher.
Harman has played well in a couple of majors in his past as well. Back in 2017, he finished in the top 15 twice. First, at the U.S. Open where he managed a T-2nd finish. Then, at The PGA Championship that year, he finished T-13th.
He is a fairly consistent player across three of the four major SG categories. 57th off the tee, 44th around the green, and 81st in putting. There is bad, there is terrible, and then there is Brian Harman’s ranking in approach shots.
He ranks 206th in SG on approach shots. That’s bad enough for -.830 SG. As long as he can channel the success from the 2017 stretch of Majors, pairing it with his strong play in the other areas of his game, there is no reason he can’t make the cut. At 250/1, I feel confident at picking Harman as a Dark Horse for the 101st PGA Championship.
Best of luck to everyone this week, and a happy PGA Championship week to all!
