It’s surprising Ian Poulter hasn’t played Colonial more often. He’s teed it up at the Charles Schwab Challenge four times: T15 in 2008, 8 in 2009, 76 in 2010 and T5 in 2015.

Narrow courses that favor strong iron play are suitable for Poults as we saw with him in contention a few weeks ago at Harbour Town (T10). He wasn’t himself last week at the PGA Championship with a missed cut.

We’ll cut him some slack as A) Bethpage was not a good venue for the 43-year-old and B) it was his first stroke play MC since the FedEx Cup Playoffs.

Poulter has otherwise been stellar in 2019 with a five top-10s and four more top-25s. He’s played well against strong fields with a T3 at the WGC-Mexico and T12 at the Masters.

His stats show him in the positive on Tour in all strokes gained categories. That’s highlighted by 15th around the green (.404), which will come in handy if the weather gets nasty out there.

Sitting at 109th in driving distance can be a problem some weeks (last week, for example), but that’s negated here.

Poulter is also 15th in greens in regulation.

He seeks his first win since the 2018 Houston Open, which also came in Texas on bentgrass greens.
