The Memorial Tournament: Power ranking the top ten golfers at Muirfield Village
The majors come in short succession in 2019. This week’s Memorial Tournament is already the final tuneup for many in the field prior to the upcoming U.S. Open.
A large group of top-ranked players annually come to Ohio to honor Jack Nicklaus, host of this week’s Memorial Tournament at Muirfield Village.
Seven of the world’s top ten golfers are here in the 120-player invitational field, which is often one of the best as far as non-majors and World Golf Championship events go. That “invitational” label is a rare distinction on the PGA TOUR, given to just five events on the calendar.
Muirfield Village features generous fairways, but if you miss them, the rough is thick. Greens also roll fast and getting up and down from around the green is a challenge around here.
The par-4s on this course are tough and many measure between 400-450. The four par-5s on the par 72, 7,392-yard layout are pretty scoreable and par-3s are about average length between 180-200 yards.
Past champions include a lot of quality ball strikers. The winning score has been 15-under in three of the last four years and it’s fallen between 12-15 deep each of the last six editions. We don’t always see such a consistent mark, but that should help us narrow down the field of contenders at Jack’s place just a little bit more.
