The Memorial Tournament: Power ranking the top ten golfers at Muirfield Village
It’s a little puzzling how Jason Day hasn’t had more success at this event. He’s a member at Muirfield Village, and he and his family live some 10 miles away. It’s a course that is favorable for big hitters of his ilk.
"“It annoys me. I want to play well in front of my family,” Day said in 2018. “Family and friends come out and I want them to be yelling in the crowd when you’re in contention. So that annoys me a lot.”"
Day was rolling at the 2018 Memorial Tournament with opening 68s, but he faded on the weekend for a pair of 74s.
He does have a T15 at this event in 2017 and is 7-for-10 in cuts made, so hope is not all lost.
There’s plenty of hope in the 31-year-old’s recent performances.
Day’s racked up four top-ten finishes in nine starts in 2019, and he has just one missed cut. He’s played fairly well at the big events, recording a T4 at Pebble Beach (something to chew on for June), T5 at Torrey Pines, T8 at the Players, T5 at the Masters and T23 at the PGA.
The stats only provide more support. He’s fifth in total strokes gained and is blending his prowess off the tee (ninth: SG driving) with good touch on the greens (10th in strokes gained putting).
He ranks fifth on Tour in par-4 scoring average and fifth in birdie average.
