Dark Horses for the 2019 Memorial at Muirfield Village
The PGA Tour heads to Ohio this week, and will be playing at “Jack’s Place”, officially known as Muirfield Village. Let’s look at some of the below the radar players who should be considered strong dark horses for this weeks event.
Now, this is going to be a little different than your run of the mill tournament that happens during the year. Everyone wants to show up to honor Jack Nicklaus. If any dark horses are going to shine through and make a run, they are going to have to get through a loaded field.
Most of the top players in the current FedEx Cup Standings will be in attendance. Which means we have a loaded field of not just top talent, but also of guys who have been playing well this year as well.
The defending champ is back this year. Bryson DeChambeau is looking to defend his title, which he won last year in a playoff over Kyle Stanley and An Byeong-hun. We could be in for some extra golf again, as the event has gone to a playoff four of the last five years.
I skipped last week’s rankings of the dark horses, because high school golf state was going on. So we will go back to the week before and see how I did with my picks for the PGA Championship that was at Bethpage Black.
Adam Scott – 50/1 – Finished T-8th
Louis Oosthuizen – 66/1 – Finished T-60th (The Sunday 79 crushed all hopes)
Phil Mickelson – 66/1 – Finished T-71st (even heading into weekend, then 76 and 76)
Kevin Kisner – 100/1 – Missed Cut
Brandt Snedeker – 150/1 – T-16th
Brian Harman – 250/1 – Missed Cut
Not a bad showing at all. Scott and Snedeker played quite well, and Oosthuizen and Mickelson were doing well until they derailed over the weekend.
For this week, we will set the cutoff at worse than 50/1 odds. That means that we are eliminating 20 people from consideration for one of the dark horses.
There have been multiple instances this year where we have had first time winners, and long shots end up winning. Let’s see if one of my dark horses can continue the trend this week at The Memorial. As always, the odds come from oddsshark.com.
