Out of principle, I don’t think I can pick Brooks Koepka to win a regular PGA Tour event. It’s just not his cup of tea. So I’ll pick him to finish solo second and be in the final pairing on Sunday with Dustin Johnson. I’ll also call my shot for next week that barring catastrophe, Koepka will be No. 1 for the U.S. Open at Pebble Beach.

In the meantime, he’ll look to get some reps in (away from the gym, that is) in his first tournament since winning the PGA Championship.

Koepka put on a ball striking clinic to win his fourth major title at Bethpage and is the clear cut world No. 1 right now. In the week prior, he contended at the Byron Nelson to take solo fourth. I like a similar story to unfold this week.

He also has a T2 at the Honda Classic, T9 on the European Tour in Abu Dhabi and won in the fall in South Korea at the CJ Cup.

Koepka ranks 10th on Tour in total strokes gained and strokes gained tee to green. This week’s short layout is a good test for him for Pebble. He usually prefers to bash it around, but he may use less than driver off the tee, which will mean even more fairways found.

His confidence is at an all-time high and no one in the field will be more care free than Brooks. That goes a long way.
