Sergio Garcia has been in the news more for his theatrics this year, but his on-course performance has quietly been solid.

The Spaniard has six worldwide top-10s in 12 starts. He made the WGC-Match Play quarterfinals, was T6 at the WGC-Mexico, T9 at the Honda Classic and recently T4 at the Wells Fargo.

Garcia comes to Hamilton for the first time rested after last teeing it up two weeks ago at the PGA Championship. He’ll be happy for a change of venue after missing the cut at the Canadian Open in 2018 whilst taking out frustrations on his poor golf bag.

El Nino has been held back by his waywardness (155th driving accuracy), so a shorter course like this will allow him to find more fairways, or at least that will be the plan. That’s huge, because Garcia is second on Tour in strokes gained approach. If all else fails, Garcia is even 13th in proximity from the rough.

No one on Tour has been better from 50-125 yards.

He’s 13th in total strokes gained and 12th in scoring average with only two missed cuts.

Garcia has an Asian Tour and a European Tour win in the meantime, but he has not won a PGA Tour event since the 2017 Masters. This seems like a week he could put that to bed.
