Rory McIlroy knows how to get the hype train going at the right time. He was on fire to open 2019 highlighted by his win at the Players Championship. It generated buzz leading into Augusta, but his chase for the green jacket fizzled with a T21.

Now, he’s back grooving again after a truly impressive performance at the Canadian Open. He turned a three-way tie at the top through 54 holes into a laugher with a Sunday 61 and a seven-shot win.

He shrugged off his only missed cut of the year at Memorial to nearly break 60 in Canada.

"“I feel like my consistency this year has been great. I’ve played in 12 or 13 events. This is obviously a win, but it’s another top 10, and basically been in the top 10 most weeks that I’ve played,” McIlroy said. “I’ve been consistent. Obviously last week to this week is a bit of an outlier. I think in golf it’s just never that far away.”"

The four-time major champ was the 2011 U.S. Open champion at a wet Congressional Country Club. He’s since had some struggles at this event with a T9 in 2015 his best result. A string of three straight missed cuts leading into this week has left some scratching their heads.

McIlroy has also missed the cut in his two times at Pebble Beach for the 2010 U.S. Open and 2018 Pebble Beach Pro-Am.

He ranks first on Tour in total strokes gained as well as first off the tee and tee to green. He had it all going last week as he averaged 324.5 yards off the tee, hit 66.07% fairways, 76.39% greens and gained 1.457 strokes a round putting.
