As long as he isn’t too preoccupied with the gnarly rough at Pebble Beach, Patrick Cantlay figures to be in the mix this week at the U.S. Open.

The way he’s been playing, he might not have to worry about the rough too much.

The former UCLA Bruin is fresh off an impressive two-shot win at one of golf’s best non-majors, Memorial, a couple weeks ago.

It was his fourth top-10 in a row as part of a streak that includes a T9 at the Masters, T3 at Harbour Town and T3 at the PGA.

He’s confident in his game and has the pedigree to get it done in the majors as a two-time PGA Tour champion and former world amateur No. 1.

Plus, Cantlay is ready for the rigors of a major.

"“I really like major championship golf. I feel like it suits my game,” Cantlay said. “I feel like the golf courses, as far as I’m concerned, the rough can’t be long enough, the fairways can’t be narrow enough, the greens can’t be fast enough. I love golf like that. So every week I look for that in a major.”"

He ranks third on Tour in total strokes gained and is 29th or better in every category. That’s very rare.

At the Pebble Beach Pro-Am, Cantlay was T9 in 2013, T48 in 2017 and T35 in 2018.
