U.S. Open 2019: Power ranking the top 10 golfers at Pebble Beach
Can DJ erase the scar tissue remaining from the last U.S. Open at Pebble Beach?
He had a three-shot 54-hole lead only to muck it up on Sunday and fall to T8.
It took a while, but Johnson squashed his major championship woes at the U.S. Open when he won at Oakmont in 2016. Now, he can add a second major to his resume that seems long overdue.
Johnson is as familiar with Pebble Beach as most anyone in the field.
He’s 12-for-13 making cuts here between the U.S. Open and the Pro-Am. Johnson went back-to-back in 2009 and 2020 and was co-runner up in 2014 and 2018. He has nine top-10s. Johnson was T45 this year with rounds of 73 and 71 at Pebble.
Johnson is in solid current form as well. He hasn’t missed a cut since the 2018 Open Championship and has three worldwide wins in that span.
He completed the runner up Grand Slam when he finished tied for second place at the Masters and solo second at the PGA this year.
Johnson played last week’s Canadian Open as a tune up and fired 71-65-68-69 for a T20.
The big hitter ranks second in total strokes gained and is top-20 in all but strokes gained around the green (52nd).
Accuracy off the tee is his main bugaboo, but he can rein that in this week. It doesn’t help, either, that he’s 15th in proximity from the rough. That’s helped to get to 13th in greens in regulation (70.08%).
There are some bad memories for DJ to overcome this week, but he’s also had a lot of success at Pebble. We’ll see which memory he makes for himself this time.
