The PGA isn’t taking much of a break after The U.S. Open. A fairly strong field heads out to the TPC River Highlands to play the Traveler’s Championship. Here are some dark horse candidates to watch out for.

We were treated to a fantastic week of golf last week at Pebble Beach for The U.S. Open. We saw everything we could want. Favorites near the top of the board. Incredible shots. People falling apart. Dark Horse candidates making their names known. Amateurs finishing high. As well as Brooks Koepka making a serious push for back-to-back-to-back U.S. Open wins.

How are we going to follow that up? Luckily, as the PGA heads to The Travelers Championship, we have a fairly strong field that should provide plenty of good golf. Just check out the power rankings Pro Golf Now put out earlier this week and you will see what I mean.

As I bring you each Wednesday, I wanted to look at some of the dark horse candidates who could finish strong this week. I told you last week that I would be bringing my “A” game. Let’s see how I did with my picks.

  • Henrik Stenson – 66/1 – T-9th – Extremely solid week, shooting 68-71-70-70
  • Gary Woodland – 80/1 – WINNER WINNER WINNER!!!
  • Emiliano Grillo – 125/1 – T-58th – Started hot with a 68, then shot 74-74-73
  • Kevin Na – 125/1 – Missed cut – 72-77
  • Erik van Rooyen – 150/1 – T-43rd – was a couple under on day one, shot 71-73-72-70
  • Viktor Hovland (a) – 300/1 – T-12th – four under through six. New U.S. Open amateur record

For the first time this year (hopefully not the last), I gave you guys the winner in my dark horse picks. Not only that, I gave you another golfer who finished top ten (Stenson), and told everyone to keep an eye on Hovland to finish top 20, which had very tasty odds as well.

For this week, we will make the cutoff 45/1. That leaves 14 players out of contention for dark horse consideration. I’ll see if I can bring you some more great finishers this week. Let’s check out the dark horse candidates for The Travelers Championship, starting with a guy who was hoping to play a little better at Pebble Beach.
