We’re going chalk for the top spot. Most of his compadres in the top 10 in the world are away this week, so I like Johnson to feast at the Rocket Mortgage Classic. Even his ‘B’ game might be enough.

DJ’s had closer to his ‘C’ or ‘D’ stuff in his past two events. He’s still rich off of a T20 at the Canadian Open and T35 at the U.S. Open, but we’ve been accustomed to more from the 20-time Tour winner.

He’s not far off from form that helped him win both on the European Tour (Saudi International) and on the PGA Tour (WGC-Mexico) this year. DJ was runner up in both the Masters and PGA Championship and rocks a 14 made cut streak (13 on the PGA Tour). That’s the longest out there after Jason Kokrak’s streak of 19 came to a close last week in Connecticut.

DJ’s worst result in the streak is T45.

Johnson ranks second on Tour in total strokes gained. He’s third off the tee and second tee to green, which are no surprises. He’s better around and on the greens as marks of 46th and 27th, respectively, show.

The 35-year-old is 184th in driving accuracy. As discussed before, I don’t know that that will be a huge issue this week. Plus, his misses are rarely too far flung.

More superlatives include fourth in sand save percentage, 18th in birdie average and second in par-4 scoring.

Without course history to rely on, I’m playing it safe and picking the best player in the field to win this week at the Rocket Mortgage Classic.
