Due to perennially weak fields and one consistent course over the last two decades, the John Deere Classic seems to favor horses for courses more than most weeks.

That’s why I’m finding room for past champion Ryan Moore. He hoisted the trophy in 2016 and has played well in 10 trips to TPC Deere Run.

The 36-year-old has made nine cuts and also posted top-10’s in 2012 and 2014.

"“It’s a golf course I have enjoyed,” Moore said in 2016. “Like I said earlier in the week, it’s one I’ve grown to like more I would say over the last few years. I’ve come to appreciate how well it does fit me and suit my game. And I think that’s where a lot of got play comes from, just being comfortable and confident. When I show up here, I feel like I can win.”"

Moore ranks 30th on Tour in total strokes gained and is in the top 100 in every main category.

He’s a very accurate ball striker (third in driving accuracy) and ranks 25th in strokes gained approach. He’s 29th in proximity from 125-150 yards. He’s also top-10 in proximity from 50-125 yards out of the rough.

Moore’s top finish this 2018-19 season came last fall with a T-2 at the Safeway Open. He also took solo third at the Texas Open and recently posted T-15 at the Travelers Championship.

Moore is a short hitter that has suffered from the Tour’s courses and players getting longer. There are still select spots on the course where his ilk can contend, and the JDC is certainly one of them.
