Joaquin Niemann took the golf world by storm in 2018 by racking up five top-10’s and gaining his PGA Tour card with limited starts. The 20-year-old Chilean cooled off a bit to start 2019, but he’s back to playing steady golf.

Niemann picked up his sixth straight top-31 finish last week at the 3M Open. That comes on the heels of T-5’s at the Travelers Championship and Rocket Mortgage Classic.

Niemann was on the verge of missing the cut in Minnesota with an opening 73. He improved by 10 on Friday and fired 65-70 on the weekend to play his final 54 holes in 15-under.

Also worth noting is Niemann has been seeing some courses for the second time in his sophomore season. TPC Deere Run is familiar after using his sponsor exemption for a T-23 (69-69-68-65). Now he’s a card-carrying PGA Tour member.

His strokes gained approach. That skill was displayed hitting 80% greens in regulation last week. He hit over 75% fairways and greens at the 2018 John Deere Classic as well.

Niemann is 170th on Tour in putting, but I envision that improving as he begins to get more comfortable on the greens. Plus, slow and smooth greens should bring him back to the field.
