John Deere Classic: Top 10 power rankings at TPC Deere Run
The 3M Open was the tournament of the young guns. Charlie Danielson, Joaquin Niemann and Collin Morikawa joined winner Matthew Wolff inside the top-15. All are in their early 20’s.
Morikawa showed a lot of resolve playing in the final group Sunday at the 3M Open. He bogeyed two of his first four holes only to rally for a 66. Morikawa’s birdie on the 72nd hole would have been enough to get him into a playoff if not for Wolff’s heroic eagle.
"“I’ve been making a lot of birdies out there and knew if I didn’t play well, I didn’t play well,” Morikawa said. ” It’s something I’m going to look back on in my career and it’s going to be one day. But to come back and shoot six under on the back was really special, definitely a lot of momentum heading in.”"
Morikawa was the No. 2 collegiate player in 2018-19 and is now 5-for-5 in cuts made on the PGA Tour.
His results show T-64 at the Arnold Palmer Invitational, T-14 at the RBC Canadian Open, T-35 at the U.S. Open, T-36 at the Travelers and now a T-2 he shared in Minnesota with Bryson DeChambeau.
Morikawa was a machine last week hitting 83.33% GIR for the week and he got around TPC Twin Cities on Sunday with 27 putts. He’s a very strategic player who can hit all the shots.
He’s a very strategic and unflappable player and one with experience in big events. He contended for a Korn Ferry Tour title in 2016 as a college sophomore at Cal and also made the cut at the 2018 API.
This will be fourth event in five weeks, but the way he’s playing he’ll try to summon one more big week to try to qualify last minute for the Open Championship.
