Fantasy Golf: DraftKings Selections for the 2019 British Open
By Hans Geevers
Rory McIlroy (11,600)
McIlroy returns to Northern Ireland playing outstanding golf in 2019. Rory has made 13 of 14 cuts (combined play on PGA and European Tours). More importantly, he has 2 wins in 2019. Rory won the prestigious Players Championship in March and followed that up with a win at the RBC Canadian Open in June.
Additionally, Rory has an outstanding six top-five finishes on the PGA Tour in 2019! In my opinion, that is very impressive.
As far as previous results at the Open, well Mr. McIlroy certainly checks that box! Rory has four top-five finishes in his last four British Open appearances, including a win in 2014.
It also has to be said that McIlroy has the course record at Royal Portrush. Rory shot a 61 when he was only 16 years old to establish the course record. Rory also competed in the 2012 Irish Open (played at Royal Portrush), finishing in a tie for 10th place.
In my opinion, Rory is being somewhat overlooked this year due to Brooks Koepka’s unbelievable season. That is unfortunate. However, maybe that brings the edge you need to win a Draftkings contest. I just have a gut feeling that this is the major championship to take Rory over Brooks.
I also think that Rory’s motivation to perform this week will be at an extraordinary level playing in his home country. For all of the reasons I outlined, I am backing Rory with confidence.
