Bryson DeChambeau – +4000 (40/1)

Sometimes, things seem like they were made to go together. Bill Felber, our well-known analytics and statistics guy, decided to take an interesting two-step process to pick a winner. It makes sense at the end who the pick ended up as.

Bill Felber’s Pick: Bryson DeChambeau – I believe that given the depth and balance of fields, it is functionally impossible to actually pick a champion in any given week via any method other than raw luck. That being so, I used a two-step methodology to select a winner:

Step 1: I wrote down the names of a dozen players I thought had a better than normal chance. In alphabetical order, that dozen were: Bryson DeChambeau, Rickie Fowler, Tommy Fleetwood, Dustin Johnson, Brooks Koepka, Rory McIlroy, Francesco Molinari, Jon Rahm, Justin Rose, Jordan Spieth, Gary Woodland, and Tiger Woods.

Step 2. Working from that list, I assigned each a corresponding number and then used a random number generator, requiring that a player’s number come up four times before I would pick him. (I wanted to give luck  a chance to validate its decision). I needed 19 rolls before somebody got four rolls. Here were the results.

Bryson DeChambeau 4, Rory McIlroy 3, Tommy Fleetwood 2, Rickie Fowler 2, Justin Rose 2, Jordan Spieth 2, Brooks Koepka 1, Jon Rahm 1, Gary Woodland 1, and Tiger Woods 1.

Dustin Johnson and Francesco Molinari both got zero love from the random number generator. Therefore, my pick is Bryson DeChambeau. I can only assume from this experiment that machines have an affinity for machine-like humans.
