Ranking the Top Five Courses in British Open History
By Matt Coles
#3 – Royal Troon
On the West Coast of Scotland sits an amazing golf course, and another with the royal charter, that has hosted the British Open nine times.
Royal Troon last hosted the tournament in 2016, and it is a British Open that will live long in the memory of any golf fan who watched it.
Henrik Stenson and Phil Mickelson went head-to-head in the final group on Sunday, with the pair finishing more than ten shots ahead of the nearest challenger.
The Swede’s 72-hole score of 264 is the lowest ever in British Open history, and his -20 finishing total saw him become the first Scandinavian winner of the tournament.
Other winners around the links of Royal Troon include Bobby Locke, Arnold Palmer, Tom Watson, Mark Calcavecchia, and Justin Leonard.
The signature hole is the par-3 8th hole, the ‘Postage Stamp’. It is the shortest hole in British Open golf, measuring just 123 yards, but high scores are often written down on the card.
