British Open: Five European Tour Regulars With Portrush Hope
By Matt Coles
Matt Wallace
The second Englishman on this list of potential British Open champions is Matt Wallace, who will be making only his second appearance in the championship.
He missed the cut at Carnoustie last year, but his 2018 season was a breakthrough one for the man from Hillingdon, after taking his maiden victory on the European Tour a year earlier at the Open de Portugal.
Wallace won three times on the European Tour, with victories at the Hero Indian Open, BMW International Open and the Made in Denmark Open. The Englishman also finished in a tie for second at the season-ending DP World Tour Championship in Dubai.
He is also in a rich vein of form in the majors in 2019, despite missing the cut at Augusta in April. Wallace then finished in a tie for 3rd at the PGA, before also finishing in the top 15 at the U.S. Open last month.
Wallace tees off in one of the blockbuster groups at Portrush on Thursday, going out late in the day at 15:10, alongside the American duo of Patrick Reed and Tiger Woods, and will be looking to become the first Englishman to win the British Open since Nick Faldo in 1992.
