British Open: Five European Tour Regulars With Portrush Hope
By Matt Coles
Bernd Wiesberger
The final man on our list comes into this year’s British Open on the back of tasting victory at the Aberdeen Standard Investments Scottish Open on Sunday evening.
It was his sixth victory on the European Tour, after he overcame Benjamin Hebert on the third extra hole at the Renaissance Club in North Berwick, all the more impressive after seven months out with a wrist injury in 2018.
Wiesberger’s first victory was the Ballantine’s Championship in 2012, and he quickly followed that up with a win at Lyoness Open. He has also tasted victory at the Alstom Open de France, Shenzhen International Open and Made in Denmark Open since then.
The Austrian will be making his sixth appearance at the British Open, but he has never breached the top 50 in any of his previous five entries. His best finish came at Muirfield in 2013, where he finished in a tie for 64th on 13-over-par.
He will be coming into this week’s event at Portrush in the hope of becoming the first Dane to win a major title, following on from Francesco Molinari achieving the same feat for an Italian last year. Wiesberger gets his week underway at 09:25 on Thursday, alongside Haotong Li and Russell Knox.
