Erik van Rooyen – T20: -1

A T20 finish at Royal Portrush this week has seen South Africa’s Erik van Rooyen continue his run of finishing every major he has entered inside the top 50.

The South African has had several top-ten finishes over the course of the 2019 European Tour season, with one of those coming at the PGA Championship at Bethpage Black in May.

His season did not get off to a great start, missing the cut at both Omega Dubai Desert Classic and the Saudi International powered by SBIA.

Four top 15 finishes came on either side of another missed cut at the Magical Kenya Open presented by Absa. However, T2 at both the Commercial Bank Qatar Masters and the Trophee Hassan II showed an upturn in van Rooyen’s form.

He followed that run of form up with a T8 finish at the PGA Championship, and then a T43 finish at the U.S. Open a month later.

Despite missing the cut at the Dubai Duty Free Irish Open, the South African continued his form into the links season and was in the final group at the Aberdeen Standard Investments Scottish Open.

That continued into Portrush, with an opening pair of 70 and 68 as he made the cut at -4. Tougher conditions saw van Rooyen drop three shots over the weekend to finish the event at -1, but another top 20 finish at a major shows his career is going in the right direction.
