It was an interesting British Open for American Xander Schauffele. He was none too pleased with the R&A after his driver was found to be non-conforming before the tournament.

Playing with a replacement driver had to have affected him when he carded a 74 in round one at Royal Portrush hitting just six fairways. He got it figured it with a 65 on Friday (13 fairways) to make the cut and fired a Saturday 69 (nine fairways), but crashed back down with a closing 78 (three fairways) to tie for 41st.

If this whole ordeal doesn’t damage his confidence, Schauffele could pick up where he left off in a productive season. The Californian was the first PGA Tour winner of 2019 at the Tournament of Champions. He’s followed with a T-2 at the Masters, T-16 at the PGA Championship and T-3 at the U.S. Open.

Schauffele has just two missed cuts and has been inside the top 25 in all but four events in the 2018-19 season (which also includes a win at the WGC-HSBC Champions).

He’s seventh in total strokes gained and is a positive in all main categories. He’s 35th in approach and 33rd in greens in regulation.

This is his second trip to Memphis. He finished T-52 in 2017 and soon thereafter began his run toward Rookie of the Year
