WGC-FedEx St. Jude Invitational: Power ranking the top 10 at TPC Southwind
While never truly in contention Sunday at the British Open, Tommy Fleetwood still finished solo second place for his second runner-up in a major championship (2018 U.S. Open).
For a tough venue like Royal Portrush, Fleetwood’s ball striking stats of 64.29% fairways hit and 69.44% greens in regulation stood up pretty well. The Englishman was also one of just four players to card three rounds in the 60s.
I guess that’s enough to make me forget about that horrid shirt he wore Sunday.
"“I think I played a lot of very, very good golf this week,” Fleetwood said. “I think for me personally it was nice to play more like I feel like how I should play again. And, of course, in a major, it’s my second runner-up in a major, which is great and I’m trending in the right way. I just hope my time will come eventually.”"
Fleetwood’s made 22 cuts in a row worldwide dating back to the July 2018 Open de France. Fifteen of those 22 were top-25s.
His last three starts show a T-13 at the Travelers Championship, T-23 at the Irish Open and solo second at the Open.
Fleetwood ranks 12th in total strokes gained on Tour and is 45th or better in every category. He’s eighth in proximity from inside 200 yards and fourth in scrambling in case things go awry.
This will be Fleetwood’s debut in Memphis.
He took two of three weeks off leading up to the British Open. I like his chances to build off last week and earn his first victory in the U.S. It’d be his first victory since the European Tour’s Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship in January 2018.
