We’re due for a Hideki win one of these days, right?

Japan’s biggest golf star recently owned a streak of six consecutive top-25s before cooling off at the British Open (MC) and WGC-FedEx St. Jude (T-43).

That span featured two top-10s as he seeks his first PGA Tour win since 2017. Injuries have plagued him off and on for his five-year PGA Tour career, but he seems in good stead now.

Unsurprisingly, the vaunted ball-striker ranks second on Tour in strokes gained approach at over a stroke per round. He’s also 19th SG around the greens and third tee to green. Even his disgusted looks on some of his follow-throughs result in shots within 20 feet.

Matsuyama’s 12th in proximity from the fairway, so it’s crucial to be accurate this week. From any category from 75 to 200 yards, Matsuyama is in the top 25.

He drove it decent (62.5% fairways) and hit 65.28% greens last week in Memphis where he tied for 43rd. He opened with a 65 before the putter let him down once again.

Matsuyama finished T-11 and was in the 60s all four rounds at the 2018 Wyndham Championship. He hit 83.33% GIR but lost half a stroke a day on the greens.

He also contended with a T3 in 2016 and has shot in the 60s in his last eight rounds at Sedgefield.
