Wyndham Championship: Top 10 power rankings at Sedgefield
Martin Kaymer has been a mercurial player in his decade-plus on the big stage. He’s got a hall of fame resume but can play like a journeyman at times.
We now appear to be in an upswing as he’s climbed 100 spots in the world rankings since May. What was the formula? Making seven cuts in a row with all inside the top 40.
Kaymer contended at the Memorial where he was solo third, placed T-9 at the Irish Open and T-20 at the Scottish Open. His major championship extension stemming from his 2014 U.S. Open win expired, so he didn’t get a crack at the British Open.
Last week resulted in a T-31 at the Barracuda Championship. It wasn’t quite what the German needed for his FedEx Cup Playoffs push, so this is the week he needs to turn it on.
The German hasn’t played the Wyndham Championship since 2015. Kaymer finished T-20 at Sedgefield in 2013 and came back with a T-14 two years later. Kaymer fired 63 on Sunday in 2013.
He ranks 33rd on Tour in strokes gained approach. He’s 10th in sand saves and has had a decent short game this season. He’s sub-100th in SG off the tee and putting.
That’s how it’s been of late as his putter was all that kept him from winning the Memorial.
Kaymer hasn’t won anywhere in the world since his 2014 U.S. Open triumph. At age 34, I can see him proving to the world he’s still got game and winning the Wyndham.
