Is this kid a stud or what? Collin Morikawa birdied his final three holes to steal last week’s Barracuda Championship away from Troy Merritt (another name to keep an eye on who missed out on my top 10).

It was just the 22-year-old phenom’s sixth PGA Tour start. It’s now the crown jewel of a resume that also includes a runner up at the 3M Open and T-4 at the John Deere Classic.

Morikawa already locked up his Tour card for next year. It took a win to get into the FedEx Cup Playoffs as he began the year as a non-member. He’s now into the top 50 and could conceivably make a run all the way to East Lake.

Morikawa’s led the field multiple times in strokes gained on approach. His iron play and overall swing are machine-like. He doesn’t have enough logged rounds to qualify for PGA Tour statistical ranks, but his 1.279 SG approach would be near the top of the chart. He’s a positive in all SG stats. Morikawa isn’t the bombing type but has enough length to succeed on most layouts.

The scary thing for the rest of the competition is the recent Cal-Berkeley standout is seeing these courses for the first time. This will be Morikawa’s Wyndham Championship debut but actually not his debut at Sedgefield. He played in an AJGA event here in 2013 and 2014.
