Wyndham Championship: Pro Golf Now Staff Picks
The Wyndham Championship is next in line, and here is the Pro Golf Now staff picks to go with it.
The Wyndham Championship signifies the end of the PGA regular season for the 2018-2019 season. That doesn’t mean there aren’t plenty of storylines to watch this week.
A big focus heading into this week’s event will be the impending FedEx Cup playoff. With the top 125 golfers making it through, a strong finish this week is going to be quite important.
It isn’t just the number of 125 either. The number cuts down to 70, and then to 35 for events two and three, respectively.
Webb Simpson – 9/1
Hans Geevers – Webb Simpson – Simpson seems to be peaking at the correct time with the FedEx Cup playoffs right around the corner. I think he improves his FedEx ranking significantly with a win at the Wyndham Championship. He has an outstanding course form at Sedgefield Country Club. Additionally, he is arriving at Greensboro in a similar form. Webb finished second in last week’s FedEx St. Jude Invitational.
Matthew Hirst – Webb Simpson – As attractive as Morikawa, Hovland, Snedz and a host of other names are this week, I’ve got to go with Mr. Webb Simpson. The man has been playing pretty well over his past eight starts – the entire year, really – with his worst performances coming at the PGA Championship and US Open where he placed T29 and T30 respectively.
In that stretch, he has also tied for both second and fifth, with a solo second coming just last week at the St. Jude Invitational. Beyond that, he has five Top10’s and eleven Top25’s on the year.
With two second-place finishes in his last four tourneys over what was eight weeks, I feel Webb is ready to pull out a win. Additionally, consider this bit from Sal Johnson at SportsLine:
"“Since 2010, [Webb] has played in nine Wyndhams and been out of the top-11 just twice. [He] has a win, a runner-up (last year) and a third-place finish; in his 36 rounds he’s 117 under par with a scoring average of 66.75.”"
Sounds like Webb is comfortable here, which I think makes him a solid pick this week.
Davey McWaters – Webb Simpson – He’s been playing fantastic the past 18 months or so, and he’s coming off an incredible solo 2nd week in Memphis. Simpson first won on the PGA Tour in 2011 at the Wyndham Championship, and I look for him to continue his hot streak this week.
Hideki Matsuyama – 14/1
Chris O’Day – Hideki Matsuyama – He’s an SG monster, ranking top ten in approach, tee to green, and overall. not too shabby off the tee or around the green either. At 12th in Birdie percentage, I see Matsuyama scoring well and often all week.
Jordan Spieth – 14/1
Kasey Kurhts – Jordan Spieth
He’s been playing better recently, but frankly, this is one of the easier fields he has played in this year. If he can’t get it done this week, what is it going to take for him to win again? More and more of his game has been coming together week by week and being a fan of Jordan’s, I’m hopeful this will be the week he gets his first win since the 2017 Open.
Patrick Reed – 22/1
Jordan Perez – Patrick Reed – He’s won in Greenboro before, and a top ten at the British Open and T12 at WGC FedEx St. Jude in the past two weeks adds up to some of his best play all season. He’s looking pretty solid on the green, which is absolutely crucial coming into a course like Sedgefield. I think a winless season has left him pretty hungry.
Paul Casey – 22/1
Matt Coles – Paul Casey
Viktor Hovland – 25/1
Eric Sedransk – Viktor Hovland – Staying with the trend of young guns rattling off PGA Tour titles, I’m going with Victor Hovland.
Lucas Glover – 40/1
Richie Randolph – Lucas Glover – He is 15th in total strokes gained on the PGA TOUR and has six top 10’s this season. He is primed for a breakout win before the FedEx Cup playoffs.
Wyndham Clark – 100/1
Kathy Bissell – Wyndham Clark – How can you not pick him? Really? He wins this week.
Kiradech Aphibarnrat – 125/1
West Valentine – Kiradech Aphibarnrat – I think he’s been knocking on the door and he finally gets his win.
Robert Streb – 150/1
Bill Felber – Robert Streb – This tourney will be won by somebody who needs it to get into the FedEx Cup. Streb is sitting at 124 so he technically is in, but only at the margin. The reality is he has to treat this event like his career is on the line.
