FedEx Cup: The History of Golf’s Current Playoff System

2019: Who’s Next To Take The Crown…?
What about this year, who is the favourite to take the crown?
With the changes that have been made, you would expect that the winner in three weeks will have had a healthy score to start with on Thursday morning.
To make sure of that, they will have to play well through the first two playoff events, the Northern Trust and the BMW Championship (as the Dell Technologies is no more).
Unsurprisingly, Brooks Koepka brings in a healthy lead in the points standings to the Playoffs. The four-time major champion, once in 2019, sits more than 550 points clear of Rory McIlroy, another four-time major champ.
U.S. Open winner Gary Woodland is in the top five in the standings, along with Matt Kuchar and Xander Schauffele, while the European pair of Jon Rahm and Paul Casey occupy spots in the top ten.
However, for the Englishman, it will be an uphill task, as he will not play in the first playoff event, the Northern Trust. He is taking the week off after a run of playing the British Open, WGC-FedEx St Jude and Wyndham in three successive weeks.
Looking ahead, and Xander Schauffele and Rory McIlroy both have fond memories of East Lake, having won the Tour Championship in 2017 and 2016 respectively. The Northern Irishman has four Playoffs wins to his name.
Dustin Johnson is also in the mix, and the powerful hitter also has four to his name, but although Koepka is yet to claim a Playoff title, you just can’t bet against him lifting the FedEx Cup.
We are sure to find out over the next three weeks. Could it be another American winner, or could the FedEx Cup go back in European hands for the third time in four years? Or could we possibly see someone from the rest of the world win it, backing up Vijay Singh’s FedEx triumph in 2008?
