A runner-up at the Open Championship and a T-4 at the WGC-FedEx St. Jude has Tommy Fleetwood closing in on a win.

He came back to earth a bit with a T-43 at the Northern Trust last week (69-72-69-70) but was still under par for three rounds. It was also his fifth top-50 in a row. He’s finished outside the top 50 just once in 2019 and hasn’t missed a cut since summer 2018.

Fleetwood entered the Northern Trust on the heels of four straight top-25s, so you know that his top-end potential is still there. I’m looking at last week as a bit of an outlier, and rolling with him again this week at the BMW Championship.

The Englishman ranks 11th in total strokes gained this season on Tour. He always seems to find a way to post a good score, usually led by his ball striking.

Fleetwood is 12th in strokes gained off the tee and 19th around the greens.

While 65 is his lowest score on Tour this season, he’s proven capable of going low (i.e. a 63 at the U.S. Open).

I’m not sure this is Fleetwood’s week to break through, but he’s bound to win in the USA sooner or later. He’s taken all the right steps, and it’s just a matter of time. Watch out when the gates open.
