DJ performed a disappearing act over the weekend at the Northern Trust. He led after 36 holes (63-67) before falling back to earth (74-73). It was disappointing, especially for a guy who’s picked to win more often than not.

He’s been just a little out of sorts for his lofty standards of late. The 20-time PGA Tour winner’s last five starts going back to the U.S. Open are T35-MC-T51-T20-T24.

Johnson’s still in prime position to win the FedEx Cup thanks to a win at the WGC-Mexico and runner-up finishes at the Masters and PGA Championship.

His missed cut at the Rocket Mortgage Classic was his only of 2019. Granted, there’s no cut at all this week at the BMW Championship, but that speaks to a high level of consistency in his game.

Johnson struggled on the greens last week in New Jersey, but he’s still 41st on Tour in strokes gained putting.

He’s also sixth in strokes gained off the tee, 12th in approach and 31st around the green.

Given the length and breadth of his career, he never stays in a slump too long.

A course like Medinah seems like it should fit well as long as he’s not in the trees too often.
