In the Sagarin rankings, which tend to be more of a power ranking/”What have you done for me lately?” barometer, guess who’s No. 1?

It’s none other than Webb Simpson.

The five-time PGA Tour winner has yet to strike gold in 2019, but he’s come awfully close.

Simpson has three runner-up finishes, all coming in his last six starts.

The North Carolina native was blitzed by seven by Rory McIlroy at the Canadian Open and lost by three to Brooks Koepka at the WGC-FedEx St. Jude. Not a bad crew to be with.

Simpson contended all the way through at the Wyndham Championship a couple weeks ago where he was one off the pace of JT Poston. Poston was the first player since Lee Trevino to win a tournament without a bogey.

Take away just one of these extraordinary performances by his competitors, and Simpson is a winner again.

He finished T-18 (65-73-67-70) last week at the Northern Trust, which was a bit longer than his liking. He didn’t stand out too positively or negatively in one statistical category for the week.

Some of his season stats are another story. The Wake Forest grad ranks fifth on Tour in total strokes gained. He’s 11th in all the main strokes gained categories, except for off the tee where he’s 91st. Simpson is 30th in driving accuracy and will hope the rain holds off this week as expected to make Medinah firm and fast.
