Credit to Rory for grinding out a pair of top-10s after what had to have been a draining week in his native Northern Ireland for the Open Championship.

McIlroy recorded a T-4 two weeks ago at the WGC in Memphis and finished T-6 (albeit never in contention) at the Northern Trust.

Last week in New Jersey, Rors fired 65-68-70-69. He hit 71.43% of fairways and gained over a shot a round on the greens. Iron play was a little lacking as he hit just 58.33% GIR and mixed great birdie looks with some woeful approaches.

"“The good stuff’s in there. It’s good. I’m just hitting too many sort of squirrely, loose shots and they are costing me,” McIlroy assessed. “I bogeyed the two par 3s on the back nine just from hitting sort of bad iron shots. And yeah, it just — I was sort of fighting it a little bit this week. If anything, I’m proud of how I just sort of hung in there all week and finished strong today. You know, put up another good finish. I’m only going to drop one spot in the FedExCup going into next week, so still go there and play well at Medinah. I’ve still got a chance to get that No. 1 spot going into Atlanta.”"

McIlroy has been the king of the non-majors this year. He raced the field to win the Players Championship, won the Canadian Open and has 13 top-10 finishes (two in majors).

The 30-year-old ranks first on Tour in total strokes gained (2.644) and is destined to win his third Vardon trophy with the Tour’s lowest scoring average. He’s currently at 69.062.

McIlroy is 22nd or better in all strokes gained categories but hasn’t quite been able to get all facets of his game to harmonize.

He will be one of few in the field to have course history at Medinah. McIlroy posted a 3-2 record at the 2012 Ryder Cup and won his singles match over Keegan Bradley to jump start the Europeans’ Sunday charge. It’s not a perfect translation, but Rory knows what it takes to win, and he’ll be in contention deep into the weekend at the BMW Championship.
