Dark Horse Candidates at the 2019 BMW Championship
The second leg of the FedEx Cup playoffs is upon us with the BMW Championship. A strong dark horse finish could be the difference between a strong placement at the Tour Championship or watching from home.
We are down to 70 golfers at the BMW Championship. The number was cut down after last week’s Northern Trust, and things are getting more serious by the minute. While the field is smaller, there are still some very talented dark horse golfers out there.
43% of the golfers are going to make it onto the next round, meaning 40 people are teeing up this week who are playing in their last PGA event of this season.
I missed getting my dark horse picks out last week, but I couldn’t miss out on it for two weeks in a row. We are trying to stay right around the normal line for picking a winner and will put the cutoff at 45-1.
This means that there are 18 golfers this week who don’t qualify for dark horse status. There are a few great golfers who just miss out, as Tony Finau, Bryson DeChambeau, and Tiger Woods are all 40-1.
Before we get to this week’s picks, let’s take a minute to check on how my picks did at the Wyndham two weeks ago.
- Jason Kokrak – 66/1 – T-6th (-16) – Even after the first day, Kokrak caught fire, shooting 64-64-66 to climb into the top 10.
- Sepp Straka – 80/1 – T-39th (-10) – Had a great shot heading into Sunday. A +2 72 ended all chances of a high finish.
- Bud Cauley – 80/1 – T-22nd (-13) – Cauley couldn’t capitalize Saturday, only shooting 69.
- Wyndham Clark – 100/1 – MDF – A +3 73 on Saturday lead to a disappointing Made cut did not finish for the fan-favorite Clark.
- Kiradech Aphibarnrat – 125/1 – T-60th (-7) – After starting with a 64, Aphibarnrat couldn’t make a run, going 72-69-68 the remainder of the way
For this week’s edition, we will pair being longer odds than 45-1 with also being outside the top 30 in the standings. Here are my dark horse picks for the 2019 BMW Championship.
