Dark Horse Candidates at the 2019 BMW Championship
Jim Furyk – 150/1 – 48th in FedEx Cup Standings
Furyk last made it to the top 30 in 2015 and has struggled since then when it comes to the FedEx Cup playoff. He didn’t make it to the opening round the last two years.
He finished 4th back in 2014, followed by a 14th, 15th, 36th, and a 1st show that he has done well in the past. As the Senior Tour approaches, Furyk is looking at a dwindling number of attempts to make it back to the Tour Championship.
I have him last on my BMW Championship dark horse rankings, and not for the first (or last) time. Vets and short games always resonate well with me, especially late in the season.
His playing history at the BMW is nice too. T-15th, T-22nd, 9th, 3rd, and T-4th is a fantastic five year run at the event.
At 48th, there is a bit of ground that he needs to make up this week, but it isn’t unrealistic. At 210 points back, a top 15 should get him the number of points needed to make it to the Tour Championship.
His iron play and short game will be the reason why he gets there. 57th and 65th around the green and putting, and then 5th in approaching the green. At .795, his SG in that category can be good enough to swing rounds and put him in fantastic positions to score all week.
Those are my dark horse picks for the BMW Championship. Best of luck this week to everyone!
