FedEx Cup: Movers and shakers after The Northern Trust
The first round of the FedEx Cup Playoffs is over. Of the 125 players that qualified for the Northern Trust Open, only 70 have advanced to the second-round at Medinah this week, and only the top-30 will advance to the Tour Championship in two weeks.
For the 70 players remaining, the BMW Championship is also the last event in which players can earn points towards their President’s Cup rankings. Both the American and international teams use FedEx Cup playoff points to determine their orders of merit.
The top-8 players on each side are automatically selected to their team, with the remaining four players to be picked at their captain’s discretion.
With the number of points available during each round of the playoffs, players can easily jump into the running, adding these strong events to their chances.
Many players helped their cause last week at Liberty National. Some have jumped safely inside the top-30 and others added to their President’s Cup résumés.
Still, others saw their hopes of advancing die at the feet of lady Liberty herself. If you were outside the top 70, then you are watching from the same place as the rest of us.
Plenty has been written about with the playoffs heading to round two at the BMW Championship. Here, we talk not just about what has happened so far in the playoffs. We also add in some President’s Cup talk, giving a broader picture and the wide-ranging implications of The Northern Trust.
