Patrick Reed

Entering the first round of the FedEx Cup Playoffs at Liberty National, Reed was tracking towards his worst ever finish in the rankings. But a win at the Northern Trust Open propelled Reed from 50th all the way to second in the standings and safely secured a spot at the Tour Championship.

Before Liberty National, Reed stood 17th on the U.S. President’s Cup list. The top-8 on the list receive automatic selections to the team, while the remaining four spots are filled by the captain’s pick.

The win moved Reed to 12th on the list, which would currently still require a captain’s pick but seeing as how Reed’s Captain America moniker isn’t a coincidence, another decent week at the BMW Championship should solidify his place on the twelve-man squad.

Strengthening Reed’s case to participate at Royal Melbourne is his relationship with captain Tiger Woods. The pair have played numerous tournament and practice rounds together, including at the 2018 Ryder Cup in Paris, France, the 2019 PLAYERS Championship, and recently at the Open Championship at Royal Portrush.

Whether or not any scar tissue remains from Reed’s comments about the 2018 Ryder Cup pairings is still to be determined, but for the moment it seems the 2018 Master’s Champion will once again don the red white and blue come December.

Reed trails Brooks Koepka by just 206 points for the top spot in the FedEx Cup and is squarely in the mix to take home the $15 million prize at the Tour Championship at East Lake.
