FedEx Cup: Movers and shakers after The Northern Trust
Harold Varner III
The biggest mover of the first-round of the FedEx Cup Playoffs was Harold Varner III who jumped 73 spots from 102nd to 29th after finishing T3 at the Northern Trust. The gigantic leap has put Varner in position to advance to his first-ever Tour Championship appearance.
A fan and peer favorite, but without a win just one top-5 finish in his career, Varner will have to earn his way into the final event of the 2019 PGA tour season.
Currently, 29th on the FedEx points list, Varner is squarely on the bubble to stay inside the top-30. Notables with the potential to leap-frog their way into the Tour Championship include Hideki Matsuyama (33rd), Francesco Molinari (34th), Tiger Woods (38th), Ian Poulter (43rd), and Jordan Spieth (44th).
The bottom line is that Varner will have to earn his way into the Tour Championship, but at the very least finds himself secure in his status for the 2020 season. A win at the BMW championship would certainly help his status even further considering Varner has only finished a PGA Tour regular-season inside the top-100 only once, well in danger of being bumped outside of the top-125.
The Akron native is ranked 53rd on the U.S. President’s Cup points list and highly unlikely to receive consideration, that is unless Varner can duplicate his monumental jump from the Northern Trust which would certainly take a victory at Medinah this week.
