FedEx Cup: Movers and shakers after The Northern Trust
Matthew Wolff, Collin Morikawa, and Viktor Hovland.
Checking in on this trio of sensational PGA Tour rookies finds only one teeing it up this week at Medinah. Viktor Hovland narrowly missed the FedEx Cup playoffs but would have qualified had the points from his T12 finish at the U.S. Open counted. Hovland played the U.S. Open as an amateur and so did not receive any points for the week.
The PGA Tour has since implemented the ‘Hovland rule,’ allowing players who qualified for events as amateurs to play as professionals. Nevertheless, Hovland will have to earn his 2020 PGATour card the hard way through the Korn Ferry Tour Finals.
Matthew Wolff and Colin Morikawa have already won on the PGA Tour and have secured their Tour Cards for 2020. But entering the Northern Trust, Wolff stood 70th on the FedEx points list, needing to hold or improve his ranking to advance to the BMW Championship. The 20-year-old finished T71 at Liberty National and dropped to 74th in the rankings ending his inaugural PGA Tour season early.
The same cannot be said for Morikawa, who is the last of the three standing. Morikawa began the week 49th in the FedEx rankings and a T52 at the Northern Trust was good enough to punch his ticket to the BMW Championship. Morikawa currently ranks 57th.
None of the three will be participating in this year’s President’s Cup but the future of international competition looks bright. All three will most certainly represent their countries at some point during their careers, but unfortunately for the U.S., Hovland might be doing so for Europe at the Ryder Cup.
The FedEx Cup Playoffs heads to Medinah this week for the BMW Championship, where the top-30 will be determined for the Tour Championship.
