Dustin Johnson has figured out East Lake a little more as his career has gone on. I think he’s trending toward finally being the lowest scorer at the Tour Championship this week, but will it be enough to win the FedEx Cup?

He’s starting the Tour Championship seven shots back and will need a little help from Justin Thomas and the rest to help make a monstrous comeback.

If anyone can do it, though, it’s DJ. Starting from behind will put driver in his hands more, and if he’s hitting fairways, there are birdie opportunities to be had out there.

Johnson is seventh on Tour in strokes gained off the tee and 27th in strokes gained on approach.

This will be his 10th trip to Atlanta. After finishing in the 20s in his first three starts, he’s finished in the top 10 in five of his last six trips. Johnson took fifth in 2013 and 2015, sixth in 2016 and third last year.

DJ was four off Tiger Woods’ Tour Championship winning pace last year, carding 69-70-67-67. He averaged 311 off the tee and despite only hitting 53.57% of fairways, he hit 72.22% greens in regulation. If he turned an average putting week into a good one, he could’ve ran down Woods.

Leading into this week, Johnson has been fairly quiet for his standards in the playoffs. The 35-year-old finished T-24 at the Northern Trust and T-57 at the BMW Championship.

Slumps in his career tend to be short-lived. He’s hoping to regain his form from earlier this year where he won the WGC-Mexico and was runner up at the Masters and PGA Championship.
