Patrick Cantlay is in a great position to win the FedEx Cup thanks to finishing T-12 at the Northern Trust and solo second at the BMW Championship.

In the process, the Californian locked up an automatic spot on the American Presidents Cup team for his first international team appearance as a pro.

He put himself high on the U.S. standings thanks to a quietly consistent year. He won one of the year’s top non-majors, the Memorial Tournament, and has a runner-up and two top-threes. At the majors, Cantlay finished T9-T3-T21-T41.

Statistically, Cantlay is one of the game’s premier ball strikers. He ranks third in strokes gained off the tee and 12th approach. He an also roll it too, sitting at 14th in SG putting.

Cantlay gained 1.496 shots per round last week at Medinah where he fired rounds of 66-67-68-65. It took a remarkable performance by Justin Thomas to keep him out of the winner’s circle.

This will be Cantlay’s third start at East Lake after finishes of T-20 in 2017 and T-21 in 2018.

He’s finished on the top half of the leaderboard in 10 straight events with just two missed cuts in 2019.

TV producers aren’t likely rooting for Cantlay, but he would be a worthy champion if he pulls this one out.
