2019 PGA Tour Season in Review: Handing Out Superlatives
Best Scene: Tiger Woods Celebrating 2019 Masters Win
Our Ben Criswell named it the most incendiary moment of the season. While Shane Lowry’s walk up the 18th fairway at Royal Portrush was incredible, there is no debate about the Best Scene of 2019.
Eleven years after his last major, Tiger Woods won the Masters. Woods, in the red mock turtleneck, captivated golf fans- and the sports world at large – with one of the greatest comebacks ever. Ironically, the final round did not have many highlights for Tiger, except for his near ace on 16.
For most of Sunday Woods played with efficiency and avoided mistakes; rather, he secured his 15th major because the rest of field struggled – Francesco Molinari, Brooks Koepka, and Tony Finau all went in the water on the famous 12th hole, and Koepka missed putts on 17 and 18 to put further pressure on Tiger. Similar to Jack Nicklaus’ incredible 1986 Masters victory, all other players collapsed around the Big Cat.
This year’s Masters was not really about the golf, though. The moment stands out because of Woods’s raw emotion after making the winning putt; not a classic Tiger fist pump, but rather a primal yell, the pride of finally conquering eleven years of mental and physical failure.
Combined with the surreal chanting from the patrons and the embrace with his son, it is difficult to imagine a more powerful scene. Nick Faldo – normally not a maestro with his words – put it perfectly when he said ‘that will be the greatest scene in golf forever’.
Woods’ victory went beyond golf and touched the human soul in a way only sports can, and it is difficult to imagine it being replicated in our lifetimes. It was 2019’s Best Scene and, maybe, the greatest in golf history.
