Golf News: The Best Golf Course Logos from Around the World
Shinnecock Hills
Shinnecock Hills, like Royal Portrush, is another recent Major host venue. Not only is it considered one of the best courses in the Western Hemisphere, but Shinnecock Hills also has one of the best logos.
Some will argue that having a Native American image as a logo is not very PC. Indeed, the 2018 US Open was protested by a small group of Shinnecock tribe members. They felt the tournament and club were desecrating ancient burial grounds.
Good for those who feel this way. Enjoy your free-range avocado, gluten-free almond flour toast, and a soy latte.
Did the protesters want to shut the whole thing down? No.
Why?
It just so happens the US Open and club make all the Shinnecock who work and live near the club a lot of money.
So, all is well. Everyone is doing well and we all know the name Shinnecock because of it.
I see a logo that’s a stunning representation of a proud, noble, and intelligent human. It represents a people and culture that embody the best traits of humanity. This isn’t Chief Wahoo, a racist caricature if there ever was one. This logo is a symbol of strength and vitality. It is colorful and graceful. It’s rich in history, yet timeless.
There is not a single insulting or disparaging element about it. The club was named to honor the people and land. If it was meant to dishonor the Shinnecock it would have been named WASPy McLandgrabber C.C.
Sorry. I’m getting off on a tangent.
It’s a gorgeous, distinctive logo and I wish the Shinnecock tribe many more financial windfalls from future US Opens.
