BMW PGA Championship: Five Contenders For The Title
By Matt Coles
Shane Lowry
The reigning British Open Champion is returning to the European Tour for the first time this week since winning his maiden major title in July.
Shane Lowry delighted the crowd at Royal Portrush, as he became the first Irish winner of the British Open since Padraig Harrington won back-to-back titles in 2007 and 2008.
In doing so, the Irishman moved into the lead of the Race to Dubai standings for this season. He took a big lead in the standings as his British Open victory added on to his victory at the Abu Dhabi HSB Championship, the opening Rolex Series event of the year.
The World No.21 has also finished inside the top ten at the PGA Championship this year, coming 8th at Bethpage Black, and he also has good memories of playing at Wentworth.
Lowry will make his return to golf on the British Isles this week, having not played on the European Tour since his British Open victory at Royal Portrush.
In 2014, the Irishman finished runner-up to Rory McIlroy at the BMW PGA Championship, missing out on the title by just a single shot.
He will be looking to go one better this week and to take his third victory of the year. Can the Irishman follow in Francesco Molinari’s footsteps to do the British Open and BMW PGA double?
Lowry will tee up alongside Rory McIlroy and Francesco Molinari in what is arguably the blockbuster group of the week.
