BMW PGA Championship: Five Contenders For The Title
By Matt Coles
Rory McIlroy
The former World No.1 and four-time major champion, Rory McIlroy, is among the favourites for glory this week after another wonderful season.
The Northern Irishman secured his first major at the 2011 US Open, before then winning the PGA Championship a year later, with both victories being by eight shots.
McIlroy then won both the British Open and the PGA Championship in 2014, becoming World No.1 in the process. He was named the PGA TOUR Player of the Year and the European Tour Golfer of the Year for a second time in 2014, having won both awards in 2012 as well.
He won the European Tour award for a third time a year later, with all three coinciding with his Race to Dubai titles on the tour.
The Northern Irishman also went on to win the FedEx Cup in 2016, before repeating the feat this year, having won the TOUR Championship in the final event of the PGA TOUR season.
McIlroy returns to Wentworth, having won the BMW PGA Championship back in 2014, beating Shane Lowry to the title in the same year as his double major winning campaign.
He also finished runner-up to Francesco Molinari last season at Wentworth, and he will play his first two rounds alongside the pair this time round. McIlroy is sure to be a contender this week!
